Budget Hotels and Hostels in Amsterdam

The following are a selection of some of the best budget hotels and hostels in Amsterdam.

    Between Art and Kitsch B&B
If you're sick of modern and fancy something with soul and character, then try this little B&B just a stone's throw from Amsterdam's museums. It's crammed with antiques and curios in a rather random but homely way. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities, but it is quite a steep climb to the bedrooms, so bear this in mind if you have heavy luggage.

    Ruysdaelkade 75-2, +31 20 679 0485, between-art-and-kitsch.com, doubles from 80 B&B.

    Chic&Basic
In general, you'd be wise to avoid budget hotels around the Central Station area of Amsterdam, but this is a little hotel that breaks that mould. It's both chic and basic, with white walls and minimalist furniture giving a clean, pleasing feel to the rooms. It's a canal house hotel, with free internet access, a quiet location and great service.

    Herengracht 13-19, +31 20 522 2345, chicandbasic.com, doubles from 90 B&B.

    CitizenM
Citizen M is a great place to stay. Its low rates belie its boutique style. Each room has a wall-to-wall bed next to a picture window, with a glass-fronted bathroom, ambient lighting and other nice touches. It's a little out of the centre in a residential area, but the city centre is just a short distance away by train or tram.

    Prinses Irenestraat 30, +31 20 811 7090, citizenmamsterdamcity.com, doubles from 79 room only.

    Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Vondelpark
Hippies hang out at Vondelpark, where they sit, cycle, skate and generally chill. This hotel is virtually inside the Vondelpark, but don't expect to find grunge awaiting you. This is a large hostel but despite the high turnover of guests, it's extremely clean and well managed. Modern, fresh and surprisingly good. Head to Stayokay for a relaxing, laid-back stay.

    Zandpad 5, +31 20 589 8996, stayokay.com, hostel beds from 20pp B&B, private doubles from 60 B&B.

    CityCenter Bed and Breakfast
A short walk away from Central Station and just off the busy Nieuwendijk main shopping street. Rooms are clean and Ikea-esque in feel and the owner, Camillo, is attentive and helpful. There are just two rooms and you have to share the bathroom. But it's worth it for the quality of accommodation.

    Sint Jacobsstraat 21, +31 64 516 0078, citycenter-amsterdam.com, doubles from 90 B&B.

    Hans Brinker Budget Hotel
This hostel is very cheap and you'll see why. It's right in the busy nightlife area of Leidseplein. The metal beds are crammed together like something out of an army barracks, but if you're young and don't mind basic facilities and would rather save money to spend on beer, then it's a perfect choice.

    Kerkstraat 136-138, +31 20 622 0687, hans-brinker.com, hostel beds from 25pp B&B, twin room 80 B&B.

    St Christopher's at the Winston
Close to the Red Light District and in the centre of things. It's surrounded by bars, clubs and restaurants, with more cultural attractions close by. Opt for a private room, each of which has been decorated by a local artist. An unforgettable experience.

    Warmoesstraat 129, +31 20 623 1380, winston.nl, hostel beds from 14.90pp B&B, private doubles from 74 B&B.

    Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Zeeburg
Superb modern hostel to the east of the city and next door to a bike-rental shop, bar and cinema, so you can amuse yourself where you're staying or cycle into the centre easily.

    Timorplein 21, +31 20 551 3190, stayokay.com, hostel beds from 20pp B&B, private doubles from 50 B&B.
